The contract required the construction of 750mm diameter piles through a reinforced concrete slab 1.8m thick to form a new foundation for beer silos. The slab was reinforced with 3 layers of 32mm diameter bars at a 200mm spacing and formed a formidable obstacle to the coring operations, which were undertaken with the MP5000 rig at 840mm diameter.
Different penetration methods were trialled, but the most successful was found to be with the use of the rig employing a special cutting head, and coring with the casing.
The contract at Marsh Leys required the piles to have several metres of penetration into very hard limestone at 750mm diameter, but also required small low headroom rigs. Martello Piling were able to penetrate the limestone, with coring equipment specially developed for the contract, the coring equipment was also used to split and retrieve the cores.
