The construction of a new storage facility adjacent to an existing silo in a highly sensitive area of the Sellafield complex required a piling technique capable of overcoming large boulder obstructions up to 2m thick to obviate the need to change pile positions in the region of sensitive services.

Martello Piling made modifications to one of their MP5000 series machines to restrict the operating height to 6.1m and also introduced mechanical control systems to ensure that highly sensitive nearby structures would not be damaged by inadvertent rig movement.

The piling operations were carried out within separation areas to contain potentially contaminated spoil and a remote spoil handling system was developed by Martello specifically for the project.

A high degree of operative training and rigid adherence to site controls were required for the project which was successfully carried out by Martello Piling.
