Heavy rainfall and flooding caused river scour to erode the foundations of a brick ached bridge supporting the Railway at Feltham near Heathrow Airport.
With the railway line diverted away from the damaged structure, time was of the essence to create a new bridge to allow the re-alignment of the railway.
The engineering solution required 15 No 900mm diameter piles at track level on one side of the river, and 6 No 900mm diameter piles within an existing flood arch on the other.
The flood arch was only 3.3m wide and 3.1m high, but Martello's MP4000 series rig was able to work within these confines to construct the 900mm diameter piles to 18.0m depth. The piles required full length reinforcement of 15 H 40 bars installed in short lengths, and coupled together, with 8 No cages in total.
The piles at the other side of the river were installed by Martello using their MP5000 series rig, which was set to operate in low headroom configuration, as a "fail safe" consideration for the trains passing nearby.
This project completed within the target programme.
