Project Difficulties and Restrictions

The scheme required two abutments of 12no 900mm piles to be constructed within the platform constraints of 16m long by 6m wide. The installation of the piles needed to be carried out without causing disruption to the local environment or the adjacent live motorway.
The project required the co-ordination of deliveries and spoil removal wagons to allow for the limited lay-down area.

The Martello Solution

Using the MP5000 rotary bored piling rig Martello were easily able to deliver the scheme within the specified piling platform (16m x 6m) installing 2-3 piles per day, and heavy reinforcing cages 12.0m long were installed using an 8T crawler crane.
The compact nature of the equipment used, enabled piling rig, handling crane, excavator and spoil removal wagon to operate safely and efficiently on the limited site area, with spoil removal wagons scheduled following the drilling operations.

Specific Project Features

A new bridge was required over the M4 to facilitate traffic flow as part of a congestion relief solution between developments south of the M4 and Reading.
The scheme required the construction of 24 No 900mm diameter piles for the bridge abutments.

Future Potential

The Martello MP500 rigs are able to work within smaller platforms to construct large diameter piles without causing disturbance to surrounding operations.

The expertise of Martello Piling for working in restricted environments enables similar schemes to be competitively delivered on time and on budget.
