Project Difficulties and Restrictions

1050mm diameter piles were required in an existing basement, where the access was via a concrete ramp which was only available for a short period of time before being demolished. Following demolition of the ramp, the rig would have to be crane lifted out via a small shaft.

In the basement, the piling operations would be required to be undertaken in just 5.0m of headroom.

The Martello Solution

Martello Piling were able to provide their MP4003 piling rig, which was small enough to operate within the constraints of the basement, yet still able to construct 1050mm diameter piles.

The rig was also capable of being stripped down to a weight of 10.2 tonnes to allow the handling crane to lift it out, via the access shaft.

The Martello solution allowed demolition of existing building and basement foundations to progress concurrently creating saving on both cost and programme.

Specific Project Features

The project required Martello to install 67 piles of up to 19m in depth and at 1050mm in diameter, working in the existing basement.

The pile reinforcement had to be delivered in 4.2m long sections to fit down the shaft, and connected together to form 12.0m long cages for the piles.

Future Potential

Martello can produce large diameter piles in existing basements prior to the demolition of the existing structure.

The need for a much larger piling rig operating from ground level can be eliminated, thereby saving money and reducing the overall programme.
