Wooferton, Shropshire

The existing skew bridge at Wooferton carries the A49 over the twin track rail. The bridge required widening and the parapets strengthening. The abutments for the new section of the bridge were immediately adjacent to the live rail tracks and required 600mm diameter heavily reinforced rotary bored piles to be constructed into hard mudstone. The ground investigation indicated that the piles would require tremie techniques to place the concrete. The MP4000 rig was chose due to the proximity of the live rail and the very restricted working space for some of the piles. The work was carried out during normal working hours with T2 possessions taken to place the reinforcing steel in a continuous length.

A later phase of the project involved the construction of 750mm diameter rotary bored piles to form a wing wall.
