A1M Junction 59

A 600mm diameter O-Cell test pile to assist with determining the design capacity

Located on the central reservation on the A1 motorway, Martello installed a 600mm diameter O-Cell test pile

Technical Specifications

Pile Type: O-Cell Prelim test pile

Number of Piles: 1no.

Diameter: 600mm

Depth: 20m

The Challenge

Martello were required to install a 600mm diameter O-Cell test pile to assist with determining the design capacity of the bridge piles. The ground conditions were made up of Glacial Till / cohesive sandy clay / gravel and cobbles.

The pile position was located next to the central reservation on the A1 motorway, which was protected by a temporary barrier. The need for bentonite plant required careful planning to the remote location and access being via the southbound variguarded area.

The Solution

The MP4002 restricted access rig is well suited to this type of project due to its low working height and quick mobilisation time.

Martello solved the challenging ground conditions through the use of C40/50 concrete mix designed to ensure strength Ultra bore bentonite support fluid, which is used to support usntable ground, has protection against contamination and produces less waste.

Martello were able to mobilise, install the test pile and demobilise from site within 5 days, allowing for follow on works on the motorway to be completed over the Christmas period.
