Battersea Power Station

An iconic Grade II* listed building being transformed from a decommissioned coal-fired power station into modern day offices, homes, restaurants and more!

Sector: Buildings

The large scale of the project required several piling contractors and trades all working inside and outside the turbine halls.

Technical Specifications

Pile Type: Bearing

Number of Piles: 117no.

Diameter: 750mm  & 1050mm

Depth: 38m

The Challenge

Piles of 1050mm diameter were required to be constructed to 38m in 10.2m of headroom.

The large scale of the project required several other piling contractors and trades all working inside and outside the turbine halls making deliveries of materials and concrete operationally challenging.

The Solution

The scheme required the construction of 54no, 1050/750mm diameter bearing piles to 27.5m.

The MP5000 piling rih was stripped down from 23-tonnes to 16-tonnes and lifted down into the "cooling pool" along with an 8-tonne mobile crane to assist in piling works. The rig was then re-assenbled allowing the piles to be constructed from the low-level "cooling pool" previously used to tank the cooling water for the turbine within the power station.

Martello were able to construct the piles in 10.2m of headroom using MP5000 series piling rig.
