Luton Mass Transit

Connecting Luton Aiport Parkway station to the airport in under four minutes

Piles installed within 6.45m of headroom beneath an existing pedestrian footbridge

Technical Specifications

Pile Type: Contiguous Wall

Number of Piles: 10no.

Diameter: 1050mm

Depth: Up to 25m

The Challenge

The project required Martello to install piles beneath an existing pedestrian footbridge in an operating height of 6.45m. The development aims to better connect Luton Airport Parkway station to the airport terminal in under our minutes. The logistics of the project were restricted due to the close proximity to the airport.

The challenging ground conditions consisted of clay overlaying chalk with flint boulders encountered between 15m and 22m.

The Solution

Using the MP4002, Martello installed 10no. 1050mm diameter contig wall piles to 25m complete with casing installed in 6no. sections. Using the bespoke low headroom rig gave the main contractor the option to install large diameter piles to depths of up o 25m under and existing structure without delaying the programme or disruption to the public and Luton airport.

Coring through the flint and boulder layers presented challenges at 15m-22m as keeping verticality was a priority. To tackle this challenge, Martello mobilised the MP5000 series rig (configured to suit low headroom) to install some piles with 22m casings.
