The Broadway

Piles installed via a temporary steel gantry

Sector: Buildings

Piles to support six residential buildings, retail units and office space

Technical Specifications

Pile Type: Rotary Bored Piles

Number of Piles: 2no.

Diameter: 900mm

Depth: Up to 36.9m

The Challenge

The Broadway project required Martello to install 2no. 900mm diameter bearing piles to 36.9m via a temporary steel gantry.

The piles were needed to support an additional turret on the corner of the building, which had been designed after the secant wall had been constructed and the reduced level dig had progressed to B2 level.

Due to the location of the project, the rig and a equipment had to be loaded onto the gantry during a road closure on a Saturday morning.

The Solution

Martello mobilised their bespoke MP5003 piling rig to install the restricted access piles. The MP5003 weighs 26t and when digging with a long Kelly bar and 2m extension pile, is capable of digging to 36.9m.

The ground was heavily obstructed with steel beams and reinforced concrete, Martello tackled this challenge by using smaller diameter tools to penetrate the center of the obstruction, before removing the remaining concrete and steel from the excavation.

Using segmental casing, Martello can reach significant depths in restricted access environments that would otherwise only be achieved with larger piling rigs.
